[Overview]
The Takamatsunomiya Kinen originally started as the Takamatsunomiya Hai in 1971 and was held as the highlight of the summer Chukyo meet.
Takamatsunomiya is also a member of the imperial family with a deep interest in sports, and in addition to horse racing, tournaments in keirin and bowling have also been held under his name. However, because there was no successor, it came to an end in 2004.
In 1984, the grading system for major races was introduced, and it began to be held as a G2 race. Before becoming a G1 race in 1996, it was held over a distance of 2000 meters. In 'Umamusume Cinderella Gray,' it is also the race in which Oguri Cap participated.
In 1996, it became the first G1 race held at a venue other than Tokyo, Nakayama, Kyoto, or Hanshin, which are the main venues for the JRA. At that time, it was held in mid to late May, but in 2000 it was changed to the current late March. Since then, it has been held alongside the Autumn Sprinters Stakes as a race to determine the pinnacle of short-distance racing.
It should be noted that if the timing coincides with the Dubai Meeting, which sees many participants from Japan, it may become difficult to secure jockeys.
